  Chapter One:

  Exodus

Hilary made her way down Main Street, clutching the money in her pocket. How strange the currency had looked when Quinn gave it to her yesterday. It was the pack’s way of thanking her for helping them retrieve their alpha’s soul from the death angel. After they fed her and put her up for the night, she bade them farewell earlier that morning.

She had to. Nex was hunting her. Lord only knew where he was, but he definitely knew her location now. She had tried to get into his head by using a spell so she could retrieve the knowledge of another valuable spell he’d taken from her memory centuries ago. The plan had backfired, and he got into her head and discovered her whereabouts.

She didn’t know how long she had before he caught up with her, but if her intuition was anything to go by, it wouldn’t be long now. She must leave Temptation before he arrived.

She looked all over but couldn’t find a livery stable anywhere or even a blacksmith. The people of this era must have converted entirely to this newfangled box-on-wheels notion that seemed so commonplace now. She saw one that was evidently for sale, but the price alarmed her. Quinn had been more than generous when he gave her money before her departure, but the cost of this car, as she’d been told they were called, was ghastly. Nex was intelligent with lightning-quick reflexes. She would require this motorized horse for a successful escape.

Hilary spotted a tall, handsome man of well over six foot going down a secluded side street. He looked agreeable from behind. Perhaps this would be bearable. She slipped down the alley and hurried after him, tugging on her blouse to loosen the buttons. The top few flew everywhere and she grimaced when she realized the strange, soft cups supporting her breasts beneath them were now fully exposed. It seemed a bit much for broad daylight, but she had a few changes of clothes in her bag.

“Sir,” she called after him, pleased by his attractive features and rugged physique when he turned around. He had short, brown hair, warm brown eyes, plenty of muscle and some tattoos. Yes, this would be more than bearable.

His eyes fell to her disheveled blouse and widened incredulously before politely returning to her eyes. “Can I help you?”

“I thought I might help you.” It’s time to turn on the charm and play vulnerable.

“And what is it you think I need help with exactly?”

“I can quell your loneliness.” She approached him slowly, lowering her tone to a seductive purr.

He studied her for a moment. “What do you know about my loneliness?”

“I know I can take it away, if only for an hour, preferably less. I’m in a hurry.” She stroked his bare arms, remembering why she had once liked men so much.

His dark eyes housed either desire or calculated intent. She couldn’t tell, but his grin was beguiling. “I should have known with the way you were dressed. It’s kind of risky, running around like that and propositioning men in broad daylight, don’t you think?”

“Desperate times call for desperate measures.” Her hands moved to the hard wall of his chest. God, did that feel nice.

  “So what are you offering?”

  “What do you want?”

  “Anal.”

Hilary refrained from rolling her eyes. Of course he did. She had no oil with her for lubrication. This just figured. “I understand.”

Something flashed through his eyes when she
grabbed his crotch. Shock or lust, she didn’t know. She didn’t care. She needed to get money as soon as possible so she could get out of town before Nex found her.

The man gently removed her hands from his groin “How much do you want for your services?”

“Enough to buy a motorized horse.”

His lips twitched in amusement. “You mean a car?”

  “Aye, a car.”

“That’s a lot of money for some ass.”

“I assure you my services will be more than satisfactory. Now, which position—”

“Turn around. I’m going to fuck you from behind,” he ordered.

Hilary wanted desperately to smack his cock for daring to bark demands at her, but she needed the money badly. She turned her back to him and faced the wall.

  “Stand up against the wall.”

She pressed the front of her body up against the side of the building, startled and aroused when he came up behind her.

“Is this the first time you’ve done this?”

  “Copulated with a man? Hardly.”

“I mean is this the first time you’ve sold your body for money?” he murmured into her ear as he gently moved her arms behind her back. Maybe he wanted her to grope him while he took her pants off.

“That information is none of your business.” It was her first time for that, but it didn’t concern him one way or the other.

“Actually it is.” A cold metal vice clamped down on each wrist. “You’re under arrest.”

  She gasped. “On what grounds?”

The bastard dared to smirk from behind her. “For prostitution.”

“I wasn’t aware that was illegal in your country.”

“Right. Well, I don’t know what the laws are in Scotland, or wherever you’re from, but here it’s illegal, except in Vegas.”

“Well, now that I know, I shan’t repeat the offense in daylight, I mean at all. Now unhand me, you unthinkable swine!”

“I’m going to have to take you in.”

“You have no right to take me anywhere, you brazen peasant!”

“Actually, ma’am, I do. I’m the sheriff of Temptation.”

Oh my god, she just propositioned the sheriff. This couldn’t be happening. She couldn’t be arrested. That would only give Nex more time to find her.

“Hey, Ben. Need any help there?”

So the uncouth officer’s name was Ben. Hilary turned to see Mark Montego approaching. She had heard his woman, Morrigan say he was a cop. Seeing a familiar face proved comforting and he looked great in that uniform. Then again, centuries without sex had also turned her into a horny she-devil in her mind. If she didn’t get some sort of relief from somewhere soon—

“Mark, save me from this bad man!” she pleaded.

Mark looked surprised to see her there and grinned. “Hilary, what are you still doing here?”

“Do you know this woman?” Ben asked sternly.

“I sure do. We had a need at the ranch the other day and she came in quite handy. She’s an expert with that kind of thing.”

Ben glared at him. “Mark, am I going to have to ask for your resignation?”

Mark frowned. “What the hell for?”

  “For breaking the law.”

“What are you talking about? I’ve never broken the law.”

  “Mark—”

“Okay, I admit I sped once or twice in the cop car when I wasn’t chasing anybody, but every cop does that. It’s kind of a perk with the job. What’s up with your top, Hilary? You’ve got like a million buttons missing.”

“How can you swear to uphold the law and then associate with someone like this?” Ben asked him in disgust.

Mark looked confused. “We just met her the other day. Besides, there’s nothing in the law that says I can’t carry on a conversation with a witch.”

  “A witch?”

Hilary grimaced. She hadn’t wanted that information to become public knowledge. It would make Nex’s mission of tracking her that much easier.

“Yeah, we had a problem with our alpha recently and she gave us some useful tips and helped us sort things out,” Mark explained.

“So you’ve never had sexual relations with this woman?” Ben asked.

Mark looked flabbergasted. “What? No! We just met her a few days ago. Besides, I have a lady. Morrigan’s the only woman for me. Why the hell would you ask me that?”

“She just propositioned me for money,” Ben said.

Mark glanced from him to Hilary and chuckled. “Oh god, did you really just hit on a frigging cop? Who does that?”

  “I’m taking her in.”

“Ben, wait. Hilary’s not even from this country. She’s just visiting. She doesn’t know how it works here,” Mark patronized.

  “She’s still breaking the law.”

  “Yeah, but—”

  “No buts, Mark.”

Hilary stepped in front of Ben and stared up into his eyes. “Look deeply into my eyes.”

It amazed her when he obeyed and became entranced by the mind control. What a useful spell she’d recently discovered.

“Good,” she whispered, “now undo these restraints. You know you want to. That’s it.”

Mark appeared baffled. “Hilary, what are you doing?”

“Shh. Now bend down.” She placed the metal cuffs into Ben’s pocket and ran her fingers up through his soft hair, resting her palms securely on his head when he bent down to make it easier for her. “Now relax and let me in. Give me that memory.”

She got into his head and zapped the memory of their first meeting from his head. The others remained intact, but that one she took.

Ben looked dazed and confused when she removed her hands from his head. “Who are you?”

“You were just giving me directions to the post office. I appreciate it.”

“No problem. I’ll see you back at the station, Mark.” Ben walked off, shaking his head in uncertainty.

Mark turned to her. “What the hell did you just do to him?”

  Hilary smiled. “It’s only a memory-eraser spell—perfectly harmless.”

“Harmless? Are you crazy? You just turned him into a vegetable.”

“Mark, do not be ridiculous. Ben does not in any way, shape, or form resemble a potato. Anyway, I didn’t take away all of his memories, only the last five minutes he just lived when he met me. I needed him to forget that so he would let me go.”

“Well, it was clever. I’ll give you that, but it’s still wrong. You can’t just get inside people’s heads and mess with their minds just to get what you want. It’s not right.”

“I have never done that before, but how could I resist two new spells to try?”

“New? How did you have time to learn a new spell if you’re in such a hurry to leave this town?”

“When I got into Nex’s mind before the plan backfired and he got into my head, I learned two new spells. Selective memory erasing and mind control. I think those shall prove quite handy.”

“Damn it, no! Hilary, stop. I’ll arrest you myself if you insist on abusing your powers. No more head games. Why were you even prostituting yourself in the first place?”

“I needed more money to get out of this village quickly before the hellcat comes and assassinates me.”

Mark grinned. “Your speech never ceases to entertain. Look, if you need more money all you have to do is ask.”

  “I did.”

“I don’t mean asking strangers for money or selling yourself to the sheriff. Just ask a friend. We’re here to help you.”

“That is most gracious of you. If it wouldn’t be too much trouble, I could use a good horse.”

“I’d be happy to give you a horse, but wouldn’t it just be easier and quicker if I gave you a ride into Jackson Hole?”

“You are kind, but I desire a horse,” she stubbornly insisted.

“Not a problem. Just stop by the ranch and they’ll give you one, saddle and all. I’d drive you myself, but I can
t just go home while I’m on duty. Morrigan and Damon should be home, and Jack probably is too.”

“Aye, your homicidal alpha. How is he faring these days?”

“Jack’s not like that anymore. He’s changed.”

  Hilary snorted. “Men never change.”

“Some do. Jack did. I did.”

“I wasn’t aware you were a killer in your past.”

Mark became withdrawn. “That’s not what I meant.”

“Thank you for your help. You have been most generous. I cannot repay you myself, as you are in a relationship, but be sure to tell your woman to ride you long and hard tonight for your goodness.”

He blushed. “Geez, I’m not going to tell her that. I mean, the first part definitely, but not that it was your idea.”

She cocked her head to the side curiously. “Why not?”

“No woman wants to hear that another woman told her man to have his lady ride him long and hard. Nobody talks like that.”

“I see. Do your people prefer to keep their thoughts discreet?”

“Not all of them, though some of them really should.” He smiled fondly without looking at her. “You’re like the female version of Jack, aren’t you?” Silence filled the void before he snapped out of his haze. “Go ahead and get your horse. They’ll be happy to give it to you.”

“Thank you. I’m most grateful. How much would you like for the animal?”

Mark started to leave and dismissed the question with his hand. “We don’t want anything for it. It’s a gift between friends, so don’t offer any money for it, and whatever you do, don’t offer your body for it. We’re happy to help you, but we don’t condone prostitution.”

“I understand. It isn’t something I have practiced before.”
